McKenzie Bridge to McKenzie Pass Bike

October 11, 2009 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Bike

Weather: 50s --> 30s

Comments:
Did the other side of OR242. Phil came over at 0700 and by 0830 we were on the bikes at the junction for 242, just off OR126. It was chilly but mostly sunny.

Phil was sluggish from the get-go, but never bonked. But it was SLOW: even on the flat it was like 12mph. To his credit, his bike tires were bigger and less inflated (40ish PSI, as we'd later find out), so that was tough to keep up with me. Almost immediately I started biking ahead, then loop around and pick up Phil. Because of that I had maybe 5 extra mile, at least.

NICE RIDE: the first 5-7 miles were boring but once we started climbing into the mtns it was really nice. Traffic wasn't too bad, even on the decent.

Once we got up to 4000 it went from cold to REALLY COLD: like low 30s. And WINDY. By the time we saw lava we were also seeing snow and ICE.

It took more than 3 hours but we finally did reach the pass, but didn't stay long because it was so gd cold! My feet were super-numb, so we stayed just long enough to put on all the clothes we brought, have a snack, then bomb down.

The ride down was pretty fun and EASY. Nice 22 mile descent. Phil flew on the downhill, even the switchbacks. N'bad.

After the ride, we hit up a pizza place midway back. KEY because they had Moose Drool on tap!

GOOD DAY, but the whole thing was blown for just a 44 mile ride!!!
