2x Baldy, quick mile

October 25, 2017 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 60, some fog, but SUN! GREAT DAY

Comments:
Slept in a bit, had a pre-race (RdL) chat with Tammy. Back story:

- I've known Tammy since...like, kindergarten. 35 years?
- she was literally (like officially) my "girlfriend" in 4th grade. Oh man, don't get me started.
- we didn't really keep in contact when I moved in 5th grade...even though I would return to Northern MN a couple times a year
- we reconnected via FB...in 2013...on a weekend in February, when I was at BGD's house (back when we did that hard Fh to the Cemetary and back run)
- we reconnected in person at Superior 100 last year...which was the first time I'd seen her in person in...20 years?
- I started COACHING her in December...
- ...she ran her first ultra in August...
- ...and now she's running Rio!!!
- even crazier, she's traveling WITH MY MOM for the weekend!

Anyway, we had a pre-race chat this am, then CA and I went to go view another house at 915 in South Eugene. From there, I went straight into a Baldy repeat run.

I hadn't done Baldies in months: maybe pre-Sonoma? But it's a good training hill: 700' in 0.8 miles, and a good historic metric. "Good" is low 10s, Great is <10, and I think my best is between 9:3x and 9:4x.

Parked over a mile away, then jogged up-creek to the start. Once again, I did this un-"timed": didn't check splits 'til after. Hard up the gravel (but really, just "run") up, then quick-footed descent (on the single track adjacent).

Felt good, but again, the air, so-so: both high humdity & fog, and wood burn smoke. Legs felt good, though.

After two up-downs, I jogged to Martin St., then started a "quick mile" finish back to the truck. Felt strong!

The only wrinkle was I busted a lace on my Salomons. WTF are you supposed to do when that happens? Cluster. I did some "Jerry-rig" between the first and second so I didn't lose the shoe.

Splits:

9:50
9:49

Quick mile: 5:41.

SOLID. That mile is downhill, but it's the fastest I've ever done in this type of workout.

Rest of the day:
- quick home to shower and "shave"
- long overdue massage by Kelly
- home for "breakfast"
- PM for work

GOOD. FUCKING. DAY. (and some news to follow!)
