This week has been one of the hardest I've ever experience. Not because of anything tragic, just a few disappointing grades and a few missing hours of sleep, as well as some discomfort in my lower left leg. I went into today with very few expectations, but as always with the intention of trying my best. I ran this course two times before I did so today, and both times were rather mentally testing. I remember last year was the absolute worst; it was hot and humid and we were the last race of the day. The year before that, the people in my race, Ethan, Amory, and Nathaniel barely had enough time to warm up and had very little knowledge of the course. Regardless, both times, I went out and gave it my best, though of course, I felt more tired after the end of last years race.
Today was somewhat the same. I cheered for most of the day and was very pleased with how GDS runners were packed up together during their races and getting PR's left and right. I took a moment to collect my thoughts at the tent and proceeded to warm up with the team. Surprisingly, the subtle achiness in my lower left leg went away. We finished warmups with plenty of time to jog down to the start and do quality striders together. I was disappointed to see, though, that the official who shoots the gun at the beginning of the race used a megaphone instead of just his overbearing voice. Nonetheless, the race was soon off and I had the thought I always have at the beginning of the race: get out there and have fun. After staying tight together with Corbin and Charlie, I crossed the mile marker at 5:57, and consciously pushed the next 2-300m before maintenance hill, which I remember being a lot harder in years prior. I felt confident at the top and let the weight of my body carry me down the next portion before hitting the phantom hill, and soon the death march. At this point, I was just trying to lock in on someone to catch, which I did. The approximate 1300m after the death march were over in a flash, and I had my heart set on getting ahead of one pack, which I did, and instinct took over in the final straight-away as I felt my body flying. I crossed the finish line and had a moment of complete euphoria as I heard "proud to be an american playing in the background" and saw my fellow GDS runners come across the finish line soon after. We all conquered the Creek!!
