I woke up today after skipping Markoff's last night to hang out with my sister and get some quality sleep. It was an easy week academically, but it was mentally strenuous to cross train 3 days in a row and run light yesterday. After a sleepy bus ride and jogging the course, I still felt some discomfort in my lower left leg, but as the day went on and I saw how the team was doing, with countless PR's and season bests, some by several minutes, I felt the discomfort go away. The extra-slow warmup helped as well. Soon, the cannon blew and we were off, and as video shows in the very very back. Nonetheless, we eased our way up in the first mile, of which I did not hear my split, though the 2500m mark had me at 8:15, which perhaps was a misreading on my part of 8:45. I continued to work my way up the pack and suddenly found myself with 800-1200 meters left, where I started to feel a little discomfort in my shins but pushed through and felt the last straightaway fly by, finishing in 17:26.7 seconds.
This was an improvement from last year, in time and in attitude. At this point in the season a year ago, I was continuing to work my butt off, but was only the slightest bit discouraged from the fact that I was bumped down to JV. I came to the conclusion, though, that it couldn't matter less what race you're in, because hard work is always rewarded. You run your race and that's that.
Once I crossed the finish line I felt a sense of euphoria that preceded a slight pain in my lower left leg that grew and grew until I couldn't put any sort of pressure on it and had to be assisted to the area where our stuff was and immobilized completely. After Anthony's closing remarks, we tried to get a gator to take me down the 1-kilometer path back to the buses, but Ethan Burns graciously offered to give me a piggyback ride, switching with Anthony for a little while like a sort of painful-for-everyone relay that eventually got us to where we needed to be. I walked (with assistance) away from today a little hurt but in high hopes for the rest of the season for myself and the team.
