Joseph, OR - Ice Lake Snowshoe

November 23, 2018 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 30s to mid-20s and snow?

Comments:
Feat of Strength!

We've tried to do a big outing here the past two years, but we've never quite made it. This year, we went for it: a long 15.5 out and back (total) hike/snowshoe to a high alpine lake (around 8k').

The first few miles were mellow uphill along the Wallowa River before turning west and doing a big climb of 4mi 2k'+. Not much snow those first 4 miles so we carried the 'shoes 'til we got about 5-6" of snow. But that quickly turned to 10-12" of fresh powder, which was "fun".

The higher we got, especially on the upper ridges, it got colder and windier! So by the time we made it to the lake, it was legit cold and darn near blizzard, so we stayed just long enough to get a pic then return.

Just shy of the lake I slipped on a narrow ridge and (besides nearly sliding down the ridge) I bashed the shit out of my left knee! Hurt like hell but recovered fine enough.

The way down was WAYYY more fun til it leveled out, then it was pretty slick on the rocks beneath the fresh snow. But we ran the last couple miles (on and off) to the trailhead.

It wasn't super fun at the time (hard work), but really glad we did it!

PM: celebratory beers at Terminal Gravity in Enterprise.
