Exercise Type: Bike
Weather: 60s down low to 40(?) up high
Comments:
Slept 'til 630 in the FH elementary parking lot, then helped CA get ready for her double Cal St run. Once they left at 8, I got my shit together for a ride down Mosquito. (I supposed I could have done FH Divide, but glad I didn't: A MILLION cyclists must've done an up-down on it, as I saw them flying down, through town, after I'd finished).
I've never been on Mosquito. I found a random park, "Big Trees Grove", on the map, and saw it was 25.0 miles from the school, so that was the mission.
The ride was pretty simple:
* about 9 miles descent to the North Fork Middle Fork
* 16(!) miles climb to Big Trees
* then reverse
(There was one mile of reprieve: from mile 4-5 / 45-46 that reversed the grade, which was a savior on the way back).
Sunny skies early, then partly sunny...then once I got up high and east, gray skies. Temps swung, too: mid 60s and humid down low, then progressively cooler.
Oustanding canyons views, low traffic, and good road conditions made for a great ride.
On the outbound, it didn't feel like it, but was working reasonably hard: like an "easy run Hardesty" -- felt "not hard", but the HR was high (160).
I was happy to finally get to the driveway for Big Trees. 6' of snow bank prevented any exploring. So I just bombed down!
90+ minutes of climb was 35 minutes of bomber descent. Thankfully it was a perfect grade down: enough to go fast, but still pedal AND feel in control.
Once at the bottom...the work began. I pushed pretty hard - workout-style - for about 50 minutes to get to Warton's. It warmed again, and made for ideal pushing conditions.
GREAT RIDE. 50.0 miles and 3.5 hours or so.
Post-ride:
* hung out in the sun and waited for CA
* they were later than expected. She struggled, but it was a good outing for her
* ate "breakfast" at the van, at 4!
* showered at "Foresthill Dave (Hope)'s", then drove to Ashland
GREAT weekend! And I didn't even run a step. :-)
Hip was tight on the anterior side. I think it's a tight capsule, yet.
