38th Annual Phillip H. Draper Invitational

May 4, 2019 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 80's; Cloudy

Comments:
We arrived at SSSA at around 12:30, and from there did a team warmup (I added on by running to the bathroom) and stretches. I had a few hours to chill before Jeff and I were to warm up. Much to our chagrin, the meet went a little ahead of schedule so we had to start a bit earlier. We checked in early and got to the infield with plenty of time to do striders as we watched outstanding performances by Ana and Joyce. I was later inspired by Jeff's performance in the mile, which provided great motivation for me when it was my turn. I went out quick, with a 72-second first lap, flagging a bit on the second with 75 seconds though I managed to pass a few people despite them responding so well to me being on them, then 77 for the third, and a 74-second last lap to make up for deceleration, crossing the finish in 4:59.85. I was exhausted coming but enormously happy when I saw my time up on the board.

This morning, before my race, I watched the video of Karl Paranya breaking 4:00 in the mile, being the first Division 3 athlete to do so. Needless to say, I was inspired. Today was the day to run a good race. It's getting to the end of the season, I'm in shape; I just felt like today was it. I went out there and competed, but not on my own. I was inspired by my teammates, who were getting PRs left and right, to get my feet on the rubber and execute. Here's to another Draper Invitational!
