Hardesty Constitutional (amended) with Mike

June 2, 2019 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: high 50s to 60s - EARLY and sunrise!

Comments:
Up EARLY to run a Constitutional with Mike. I lied: I did one of these in late 2018 (about a week before Oregon Coast 50K); otherwise maybe one other one in early '18 before I got really sick.

We left at 5AM and launched from the TH by probably 5:40. I ran my own pace on the way up. Mike is usually around 78-82.

BITD? My "par" was about 63-65. Recent years it's been more like 68-70. (My fastest was in '12 or early '13: 58:xx). So I was interested in seeing where I'm at. I thought that bike fitness would be valuable and I'd be able to run a solid time.

Major form focus on the way up:
* hinge (butt back)
* hip extension (especially right)
* up-down pelvis
* scap-arms

Felt pretty good. Not easy, but not hard. Breathing was super-controlled (3-in, 2-out).

It was so nice to run up at sunset - you could actually see the sum shining through the trees as we climbed the ridge.

Wasn't surprised - but mildly disappointed - that I split 72. Oh well. Not great, but again...fine for where I'm at. I sat up there and enjoyed the morning -- my first-ever Hardesty Summit before 7AM -- for a full ten minutes 'til Mike showed up.

After a quick break for him, we rolled on.

Surprisingly, he ran super-well on the downs on Sawtooth. First half was in terrific shape, then the second had a ton of downed branches we had to step-over.

Split: 32 or 33?

Lost creek was in really good shape. Mike got a little lazy on this descent, but maybe because we finally started chatting. The trail was good 'til the final section (at about 2000'), then tons of downed branches and the occasional tree. Then when we got to the road, it was pure shit!

Split: 32-33

The side road to Goodman was rough: about three dozen downed trees over the road -- all this from that major snow storm in February. Thankfully after the first mile, it was cleared!

From there, I took off and ran "medium-hard" - or just trying to be efficient - on the road. LOVE (/hate) this section -- it forces great stride efficiency. Ran a couple mid-six miles, then waited for Mike at the Goodman upper TH.

From there, we were encouraged: the first bit of Goodman - which we heard was a war-zone - were cleared! (There was a big MTB trail work day, Saturday). But about a quarter-mile in, our luck ran out: they'd stopped.

So we had to turn back and go back on the road. But even that was shit: about 50-60 trees and a landslide!

The final mile or so was cleared, so I pushed that a bit, again. By then I was STIFF but OK.

I waited for Mike and we ran the treacherous quarter-mile on the highway to the TH parking lot.

Just about 18 miles and 4200 feet. Not as hard as the trail, but still a solid run and "debut" on the home trails!

Hips were pretty much fine. The right ankle got a little stiff at the end.

Rest of the day:
* met CA for breakfast in SPFD
* NAP at home
* worked on the van
* weights
* dinner

Good day
