Johnson Camp Trail - Humboldt Redwoods SP

November 26, 2009 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: high 50s, warmish

Comments:
Woke up around 5, packed up and hit the road for Humboldt County. The original plan was to leave WED night and do the long ride on THU, but I didn't want to battle traffic so I left today.

Pretty quiet, nice drive, but it took a LONG TIME. Didn't get down to Mattole Rd/Big Tree TH 'til maybe 2ish? Loaded up with the new shoulder hydration pack and rolled.

For being pretty much "straight" uphill, it was a nice out and back. The Johnson "tie hacker" Camp was pretty cool: a couple of old cabins and such. There's supposed to be a lookout farther up the trail, but I had already run 5+mi and needed to save energy for the bike, so I turned back.

The downhill felt a little shitty, but otherwise the run went well. Barely felt the calves.

At the very end, there's this long log you have to cross over Bull Creek -- as they take out the "summer bridges". Right when I got there a family was crossing it. Last was this old guy just SHUFFLING across. And, OF COURSE, just before he got to the end, the guy lost his balance, half-ass jumped, hit the edge of the river, FELL BACK and hit his HEAD on the log. CRIPES. He was OK thankfull...but hopefully no delayed onset brain injury or some shit.

Cruised back into Eureka, had a beer and nachos at Lost Coast Brewery, then had to haul ALL THE WAY back to HI Redwoods. I didn't realize how far it was -- like 75 MILES. F. On top of that, it started raining hard...

Pretty good day, but I was annoyed with all the driving....
