LONG BIKE RIDE.
It's been my resolution to do one long ride per month this year (or at least 'til Waldo), so this was the next installment, following the Lost Coast ride.
Callie enthusiastically (OK, maybe reluctantly) hopped on once she realized her calf needed more rest. We got up early so as to get most of the ride done, then meet the rest of her family at Cape Flattery - the "most northwest point" of the US.
Up at 530 and out the door by 615. We drove down a few miles and parked the van along the highway and launched from there, stashing a key for the family to get the van.
The ride summary:
* the first half was a little boring: rolling highway amidst trees (away from the coast)
* the logging trucks were fairly terrifying. SO FAST and loud! (but thankfully no close calls)
* I was tired! I guess the track session - but mostly the lack of sleep this week - drained me
* Callie did great of rolling fast on the flats and downs, even though her ups were fairly slow
* we started to get some cool views about 20ish miles in, as we got to one of the higher points of the ride: pure coast along the "Juan de Fuca Strait"!
* the latter half - after Clallum Bay - was outstanding: great views of the sound and rolling highway
* the final mileage - the 7 or 8 miles past the town of Neah Bay to the Cape Flattery TH - was tough. I was fatigue (and possibly calorie) bonking a bit, on this painful grind uphill. But thankfully it ended on a bit of a down!
Total: 65 miles and 4.5hr (5+ total) ride time.
GOOD EFFORT, especially great for Callie - maybe her longest ride ever!
Rest of the day:
* short hike to the end of Cape Flattery - gorgeous!
* longer hike to Shi Shi beach (tired!)
* back to the house for another great dinner and hangout on the deck!
