PDX: Beaverton 2x 2.1-mile tempo

July 14, 2019 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: HOT. "Only" 80, but HOT in the direct sun

Comments:
Class got out right at four. I drove the van down the hill a bit to start.

The plan was to do a boring-ass road suburban run, simply because I wanted to flat grind, and I didn't want to take the time to drive anyway far. On Strava I found this two mile neighborhood loop (like, ZERO through traffic) that's been done like 2500 times! (Clearly a popular workout loop, as some Bowerman Elite guy has done it in 10-flat), so I ran directly there from the hospital.

I was 100% fasted to start (9PM to 4PM?), but carried a banana, of which I ate half, then stashed it in a bush for later.

The plan was 3x of these 2.1-mile loops, gradually getting faster.

I took off, counterclockwise, into a substantial hill! Got up to a plateau and cruised, gradually around the circle, which the gradually lost the vert - with a couple tiny upward bumps.

The direct sun was HOT. It's not literally that hot, but since I do most of my running - and nearly ALL my hard running - in the cool AM temps, this was a big change.

Didn't feel all that great, but worked hard on form, namely staying hinged and rather "low", as well as the usuals: pawback, feet, etc.

Felt solid enough through the first lap, but HOT. Walked for 2min and ate more banana, saving a nug for the final lap.

Second lap wasn't a ton harder, but I did have this very short episode of loss of breath - don't think it was irregular heart beat, but felt like it. I broke stride for about 5 seconds, then recovered.

At the end of the second lap, I got acute 4th left toe pain -- this happened at Baldy several weeks ago. It FEELS like broken skin under the toe, but I'm not sure. Annoying! Makes using the feet even tougher.

Finished the second lap pretty baked. It was faster, but tough. After walking for 45 seconds - and knowing that this is:

* my first long road grind of the year
* my first HEAT run of this kind

I bagged the 3rd set. Thought about running back to the community pool I ran past, a quarter mile back, but my toe hurt too much, so I just ran back.

The return run was actually tough since so much of it was uphill! The toe was shitty, initially, then came around.

GOOD RUN.

Splits (pace) for the tempos:

1. 13:13 (6:19 pace)
2. 12:52 (6:07!)

Rest of the day:
* SUPER-hot, dripping with sweat. Got water in the hospital then drove south...
* ...and stopped at Residence Inn one more time to take advantage of their outdoor shower!
* drove home

Good weekend. Very monastic, but I loved it. Spent $27 total from Thu night - Sun night.

(Note: wearing my last pair of PI N2s, to help my feet)
