Akron Half 2019

September 28, 2019 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
The 2019 Akron Half! I always forget how awesome the collective energy at one of these races is. I felt it as soon as I arrived.

My plan was to run the first 6 at easy to moderate pace. They ended up being: 6:56, 6:39, 6:35, 6:44, 6:34, and 6:37. These felt pretty easy and I was just crusin' along.

The 7th mile I wanted to come down to steady state - ran 6:17 - came down to this easily and felt good.

For the last 8 - 10 I planned on tempo (around 5:50), then CBus goal pace for 11-13.1 (5:34 - 5:42). The splits were 5:52, 5:58, 6:08, 5:54, 5:39, 5:34. Speeding up to tempo felt very smooth - however, in the second tempo mile I noticed my pace slowing and my legs lagging. When I tried to bring it back down it was harder than I expected. The 6:08 came from hitting the rise back up in elevation. When it came time for goal pace - I worked hard to just get back under 6 and then brought it down with the aid of a very large decline the last two miles. So, my goal pace section averaged out to 5:42 which hits that mark - so that is good! Without the downhill though I'm not sure I could have hit that.

So, overall more trouble with tempo and goal pace than I predicted - but there was the elevation climb, running 60+ weeks (before and present), and just straight training through this race - so maybe I should have expected more of this.

I was happy with how it went overall and for what I planned it to be. I think it gave me a good assessment of where I am and I was able to really enjoy the experience of the race as Akron always does a GREAT job.

Good day - race 1 down - now for the main focus.
