2019 Columbus Half Marathon

I woke up feeling pretty good and also confident. Had some nice almond butter toast with honey and an apple about 2.5 hours before warm-up.

We got downtown and over to the starting area before things really got too busy. I started my warm-up around 6:30 and did probably about one mile and three quarters. Drills, jogs, and make-shift strides in the grass next to corral A. Everything here went smoothly except needing to pee again so I just had to go behind a porta-potty as there was not enough time to wait in line.

The fireworks went off and away we went. I felt quite relaxed in the beginning but also was running about 6:00 pace. I sped up - still feeling relaxed and had a first mile of 5:45. My legs weren't feeling too loose but I think that was the standing before the start. I pulled up to a group for a bit, then pulled past when I checked my pace and started moving towards the next people ahead. I came trough the second mile at 5:49. At this point, I wanted to come down to 5:40s so increased the pace. Miles 3, 4, and 5 were 5:36, 5:44, 5:43. I was running with several different guys for some different stretches in here. Around mile 6 (5:42) a guy went by me pretty which was a nice reminder that if I wanted to bring my pace down, I needed to stick with someone. One of the next to come up on me I went with which felt good and strong. Miles 7, 8, and 9 were at 5:35, 5:38, 5:31. I felt pretty good running with this guy and I knew we had sped up. I think it was just before 10 (at 9.7) I let him go some. While I felt good, I was not sure I could hold that pace and was worried about it coming back to get me. So, I ran the tenth in 5:33 probably 8 seconds back of him and then lost him. I slowed to a 5:40 in the 11th. I do wonder looking back if I should have just stayed with him for as long as I could and really tested my limits. Mile 12 was 5:50 and I was starting to feel the fatigue. From 11 on I tried to focus on racing and moving up but really didn't have a whole lot of people to do that with and was alone. I am happy though how I dug down to close in a 5:27 13th mile and 5:14 last bit. I definitely had a strong finish.

Looking back at the race, I really executed my plan well and feel like I ran strong. I started conservative, lowered the pace, ran with others to lower it more, and then picked it back up in the end. I only question not staying with that guy and would have liked a stronger 12th mile.

Good day. I know I can still run faster and think this was a big success. My watch had me at 13.22 averaging 5:39 pace which would have been a 1:14:03 (5 seconds off PR). The official time had me at 1:14:40 averaging 5:42. Either way I averaged in my goal range, had a good day, and ran strong. This was a good day.

27th overall, 12th in age group. I was extremely pleased with my place - got it! (Top 27 was goal).
