Time Trials at Duke Ellington

May 9, 2020 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 40's; Sunny

Comments:
Met up with Wolin and My Son to start warmups and get things moving timely. The man himself DOM showed up just before we got going. Wolin and My Son were going for a 1600m time while I hoped to break my PR for the 3200m. My hope for the day was to break 10; 10 60 second laps on a 320m track, although Anthony and Mark were helpful enough to organize 400m splits. Wolin ran a PR of 5:17 and My Son was shortly behind him with an incredibly strong effort of 5:27, believe. DOM went shortly after our race had ensued and proceeded to run 5:14 completely alone. There was a certain awe that hung above Duke Ellington Track afterward. I was super impressed by what the team could put together today. The cruelest of droughts are followed by the most glorious storms.

Anyway, back to my race. Went out a bit slow, but kept up the pace. Tried to chip away at the 400m times a bit, but they were all north of 76. I split 5:12 for the first 1600 and just kept at it for the remainder of the race. I was all alone, it was cold and windy, etc. I had a million reasons to phone it in, but I kept my head on the grindstone and worked. Kicked hard last 2 laps, split sub-60 last 320. In the end, ran 10:21. Not a PR, but certainly a lot of improvement from this time last year when I was coming off an injury and a lot of self-doubt. This weekend would've been MACs, which certainly has me in some kind of mood. I feel robbed of my Senior season, but my heart goes out to those more affected at this current moment (health care workers, those who have contracted the virus, those out of work, etc.) but also other athletes who haven't been able to practice with their teams, non-distance runners who don't have the luxury of their fork and knife being shoes and some ground, or even distance runners who are having trouble getting out the door or staying motivated. There is not a single soul untouched by this virus. Got another 1600m time trial this Wednesday to wrap up 4 years on this team.
