July 20, 2020 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Walk
Weather: 60s, beautiful
Comments:
Slept OK, but not great. Up at 5:45 and down the road by like 6:15 for a bonafide North Cascades NP hike before Bert and Courtney had to head east.
Drove from our site, another 5 (slow) miles up to the TH.
Silly as it may seem, I actually wore my full boot on the hike. I wanted to check out this epic route, and I didn't want to flare. So...that's what I did, and it wasn't that bad. The footing was sketchy at times, but it worked out well.
Long, easy ascent with a ridiculous amount of swtichbacks! 32 switches over about 2 miles (and only about 1200' of climbing?), but it was nice and easy. From there the trail ran a ridge up to the pass, an amazing saddle point between two big mountain basins.
Really beautiful. Glad we did it.
Rest of the day:
* drove back down to WA 20. Stopped in Newhalen to regroup
* CA & I had "planned" on going east, but when we did the math (and given CA's Tuesday meeting schedule) and it was just too much driving. So after breakfasting in a park there, we drove back west.
* jumped in the Skagit River to cool off (90+ degrees out there)
* drove to Bellingham and Lake Padden, which was JAMMED with people on a peak-warm day (only 80F) in B-Ham. I worked on coaching while CA ran
* dinner and beer at Aslan...then we drove ALL the way home!
Long end to a great trip.
Note: NO flare in L ankle with the long hike. Promising.
