Whathum Lake - PCT hike/run

August 8, 2020 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 70s, nice

Comments:
Fun "crew" day. Slept 'tli 8, then called Josie to wish her a happy birthday. Around 8 or 9 we drove into Goverment Camp for coffee, ran into Ian, then followed him up to the next major "AS", Lolo Pass. This is on the 9 o-clock side of Hood and really represents the 50K home stretch of the PCT to the Columbia.

Got there mid-morning and hung out with the other Emily supporters. TONS of people at this tiny (non-TH) - as this main TH was closed due to contruction. Covid times: 3x people when 0.5x is max safety.

Around 1, Emily came in. I tried to work on a potential nerve tension solution for shin: doing pelvic/nerve mobs, then doing some shin worked. Not sure if any of it helped. She was in good spirts, and kept pushing!

After that, we took a bunch of sketch roads to the next place, Whathum Lake, about midway to Cascade Locks.

Cool wilderness TH/campground about 250' and 0.2mi above a cool sub-alpine lake. Right away CA and suited up for some proper exercise.

We hiked down, then began to jog

WEIRD SHIT: I had a bunch of BAD R forefoot pain! This, I quickly realized, was ALSO nerve pain: deep fibular branch of the right side! The left ankle was pretty good, but every time I stepped on a big/jagged rock, it hurt like hell, so we turned back and did about 3mi running and a mile of hiking.

Jumped in the lake for a rinse, then changed, ate and hiked down in time for Emily to come in for one last AS! She was there for maybe 15min, then off!

For us: we drove into Hood River, then 84 to Cascade Locks.

Waited 'til about 12:30 at the trailhead on the skirts of this little river town (just below 84 overpass). Following her on the tracker, CA and I hiked uphill a half-mile and joined her big pacer pack (including the Suchmans, who picked her up a mile back)...and we ran to the river!

Cool moment. So damn impressive. New OVERALL FKT by nearly 3 hours.

After that: no big hangout, no beer. We drove to the WA side, thinking sleeping would be better. It wasn't really. But we got a decent spot and hit the sack.
