Ocean Road to Perpetua to Gwynn Creek & Back (mostly solo)

September 5, 2020 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: sunny 60s

Comments:
CA and I were slated to try a longer run, including some ideas to run faster on some (strava) segments along the trail.

To cut some distance, we parked at the "wedding ceremony spot and ran from there. I felt a bit sluggish - and still SORE - from the track workout Thursday. CA felt good and set the pace on the rolling trail toward the Amanda memorial.

Once there, she noted her calf was tight. After stretching, then running like 50m, it "tweaked". CA was done.

Frustrating!

So I ran the rest solo. The plan: "tempo/hard":

* up from Amanda to the lookout (2.5 miles)
* up from the CG to the lookout (1.1 miles - on the way back)

So that's what I did. Take-aways:

* I'm in OK "lungs" shape but NOT in climbing shape
* trail running is HARD!

Ran hard up to Perpetua, but by the time I got up and over, I felt gassed! Yeesh!

Ran shuffly-easy down to Gwynn. The smallest loop back to Cook's trail would've been like 18, so when my watch hit 7is, I turned back.

Outbound: ran through the campground and saw Tara and her friend still there. Chatted like a minute then pressed on. (Still a surreal experience. See Friday).

Pretty damn tired back to the CG. Started walking some of the moderate ups. But once I hit the CG and the Perpetua uphill segment, I pushed hard.

Jake Hegge used to have the CR (from our wedding) at like 11:xx. It's now 10-high (for 1.1 miles of rugged, nearly 800' climbing). STOUT.

I struggled. So hard! Almost asthmatic!

Topped out at like 12:30. :-s

Oh well. Good effort. Ran easy back. Ran into Rob Russell (Yachats local, super nice - and crazy-grinder-fast guy), stop-n-chatted, then finished up..

Solid run! Feet and ankles were OK. So interesting to consider their historic soreness (even back at WSER in '12) is actually nerve sensitivity!

Rest of the day:
* showered at the van
* coffees and pastry run at GS
* breakfast/brunch at Smelt Sands. Fellow WSER med volunteer Alene Aldrich and her husband stopped by (up from Sac for a beach week)
* drove around looking at real estate
* beach beers & dinner?

Solid day!
