Went out earlier than 9am practice because Jack had class at 10. Starting our warmup around 8:15, it was me, Jack, Nathan, Whamz, William, and Sammy. First mile of the tempo felt pretty good, but during the second mile I started to really cramp up. I just tried to ignore it, which I think I did a pretty good job of, but I think it did slow me down a bit. My breathing wasn't too bad, but that cramp and tired legs made this harder than it should've been. I lost the pack of Jack, Nathan, Whamz, and Sammy around halfway through the tempo and then gradually caught back up to them by the end (finished probably 5-10 seconds behind them), passing Sammy who dropped back with maybe 3/4 of a mile to go. Going down the hill to finish was awesome, you can really fly down that thing. Wish I had been able to stay with the pack--mental toughness was just not there today. However, the average pace ended up being 5:45, which is right where we wanted to be anyway, so I guess I should be happy with it. I think next time should be easier now that I remember what this kind of effort feels like. Beat my MainLine time from last fall by like 22 seconds so that's cool, and I think I was only 7 off my PR for 4 miles, which is nice considering this didn't feel anything like a race effort, even though it was hard.
