King Range - south Lost Coast loop

February 20, 2021 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: on and off sun, but chilly wind

Comments:
TONS of driving today. Rained all night, but stopped in the AM.

Drove from Mattole Point/Petrolia, inland to Honeydew. From there, we drove south on a circuitous road toward Shelter Cove. The idea was to get to the other end of the Lost Coast Trail.

Shelter Cove...was a real town! Super-interesting. Must've logged it bare BITD. It was a lot like Yachats; built up more in some ways, but much less services in others.

Found our way to the TH, perched atop a lookout....over the "trail", which was just the coast beach! We ran down there to find the same heavy-ass "mini-rock-sand", which is completely unrunable.

So we left and drove toward the south end of the Lost Coast Trail.

Parked at "Hidden Valley" TH and did this small trail loop, then added on this ridge trail (Lost Coast/Chemise Mountain?). Really cool up there -- had some great coastal views -- but lots of climbing. Descended the high ridge into a campground. Ran two miles on a road back to the van.

TIRED. And possibly histamine'd but in a weird way.

Rest of the day:
* showered at the van
* meandered out of the King Range, east to 101
* 101 to Avenue of the Giants, where we did a couple "auto tour" stop-offs, which was cool
* to Fortuna and Eel River Brewery for an outdoor beer
* made dinner in a park at sundown
* drove back to Samoa Island to sleep

Pretty good day, but I was wiped out.
