First-ever skimo race!
I nearly didn't do it. I was apprehensive of getting hurt, then I couldn't find a headlamp. But I hustled to both residences, found my shit, and got there just in time.
SO HARD. It started easy, but when the course turned up a black diamond and switchbacks, it was brutal!
Here was the pattern:
* light uphill
* steep, switchy uphill
* "Boot pack" - remove skis and trudge up like a 60-degree hill (total climb: 2000')
* ski down (to the backside of the resort)
At the bottom, like a full hour in, there was a guy giving away free beers! I had one - a delicious session IPA - and that made all the difference. :-)
From there:
* in the woods uphill ski (some switches, but less bad or steep)
* short boot pack
* more uphill (total: maybe 1000')
* ski all the way down
My legs were burning SO BAD and, of course, I get passed by two people on the way down!
Hard, "not fun", but also super-fun.
Afterward: second-beer at Slopeside, then home.
Let the weekend begin!
