Steamboat: Dry Lake to Emerald & Back

September 3, 2022 (Night)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: mostly dark: cool in the Spring Canyon, warm on Emerald

Comments:
Weird, but ultimately good, day:

• up at 3
• First Class (but shitty breakfast!) EUG to DEN
• long (and unproductive) layover/United Club
• flight to Montrose

Then I drove straight up to Steamboat. This wasn't the original plan, but Callie developed a mystery injury a week+ ago, after my old mentor manipulated her neck. She's got Wasatch in 6 days, so I agreed to come up and help. I had a feeling - knowing her body for 7 years - that I could help.

It would also afford a chance to do one more course run, and otherwise hangout in Steamboat.

Got to her place at 4:45 and worked for two full hours. I was SO tired and out of it on the drive I considered not doing it, but we did good work and got her moving a ton better, and that gave me energy, so I went for it.

Departed Dry Lake TH and headed back into town around 7:45.

Felt STIFF and clunky, in large part thanks to the Pisgahs yesterday.

Also, I did ZERO physical self-care all day, including any nerve tension mitigation. So I was understandably heavy, and I forgave myself for that. Thankfully my energy was good.

Ran down Spring Creek into town, to Howelson, where I filled my hydration pack and decued, then headed up Emerald.

Patiently hiked nearly the whole Blackmere and Lane of Pain to the top. Ankles and calves felt crappy.

Once up there, I cut off the 5K loop up there and immediately turned back on Morning Gloria. My vision, however, was SO shitty! I could barely see the trail. I haven't run with a headlamp in so long! So I must've been doing a dainty 11-minute pace, it seemed, on the narrow, winding but mostly smooth singletrack.

Finally picked my way through that, then realized the headlamp was only half on! That, plus holding it in my hand, helped me see the trail so much better.

Descended, got more water, then headed through town and up Spring.

Once I Spring, I kicked in some 80s music on my phone. That was fun! And despite the significant climbing, I ran about 90% of the trail back to Dry Lake!

Good outing! Finished around 12:30.

I was feeling "saucy" from the effort, so I wound up at Sunpies (THE only late-night - and young persons' - bar in Steamboat) at 1am, celebrating with a Coors Heavyf!
