RRR 81-miler

September 16, 2022 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: on and off POURING rain, generally cold

Comments:
The bulletpoints:

• weather turned to shit on the climb up. It was like WSER '12 at Mt. Werner. Callie was kind/generous enough to loan me her gloves.

• warmed-up and felt decent to Fish Creek Trail, then felt GREAT down to FCF aid station. This is the best I'd feel all day.

• began to feel bonky and "low" midway to Long Lake. Pounded a TON of calories, including a full can of coke, at Long Lake AS. Felt crappy leaving and climbing the road, but gradually came around.

• briefly POURED RAIN at Summit AS. Pounded more Coke, then headed out. Felt solid and moved well. Same with Billy's Watering Hole. Had some gut rot and deuced along FOG. Stomach was beginning to feel iffy from the Spring Energies (particularly the Canaday's)

• Felt solid at Dry Lake I. Changed shoes into Speedgoats but they SUCKED, compared to the Tectons! Moved decent to town, but once I got there, I felt HEAVY. Really nice to see Karen (and my crew) at Oly.

• Emerald was kind of tough. I was really tired. I felt scared. I hiked nearly all the uphill to the actual aid station at the crossroads/Morning Gloria. They had really good coffee there, which tasted good.

• Slow going on that upper Emerald loop. That 3.x took forever! Was pitch-dark by then. More good coffee...but stomach was worsening.

• Descending Morning Gloria/Lupine took a long time. Passed one guy. Fell. More gut rot.

• Nice to get back to Oly and see family and friends, including Brent & Gabe, who dropped by to support. Pounded more Coke...

On my way out with Jake: I made a voice recording to Jules and sent it to her. Thought A LOT about her all day. Feel increasingly badly about the email.

• made decent time with Jake on Spring Creek. Listened to some 80s tunes, which was fun/

• but once at Dry Lake 2, I felt TERRIBLE. Very low energy, heavy legs, and BAD stomach. Took only a half-bottle of ginger ale (+ my pack), and donned by light puffy. Cold.

• SLOW going out of Dry Lake, then warmed up and felt better. But then JAKE began to feel like shit! WTF? He ate some weird shit and that, plus the altitude, left him miserable. We walked nearly the entirety of Grouse, all the way to Billy's.

• Once at Billy's...Jake was done. I sat beside a mildly-warming fire as temps hit freezing or lower. Drank broth (without any starch), which seemed palatable. Then, after maybe 20min there, I took off solo. But a quarter mile out of the AS I was shivering so badly that I nearly turned back. But I got angry and kept going. Jammed to my "midnight jamz" playlist and felt better. Quit drinking to any schedule at all. Slow-going but I made it to Summit.

• Once at Summit, I had 8.2 miles to get back to Speedgoat at Long Lake. But how would I get there with no fuel and a terrible stomach? As I assembled my gear, including mom's spare (non-waterprooof) puffy, the AS encouraged more broth, and including noodles/potatoes. Did so...and my stomach absolutely turned.

While sitting there contemplating whether to continue, it began to POUR rain.

I was done.

Sat there for like 3hr before Jake/Miles drove up to get me.

Lots of lessons learned:

1. I wasn't fit enough to "run" that far.
2. OVER-HYDRATED! Big factor in both malaise and stomach!
3. Under-prepared for the cold AND wet!
