Race

April 18, 2010 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
38 degrees -- 10-15mph Winds

Course had over 750 feet of elevation change and was 90% rolling hills. All up hills were long and slow, with some steep and long hills but nothing excessively ignorant. Most downhills however were difficult to take FULL advantage of because they declined and were so short in comparison you couldn't open your stride all of the way.

Didn't want to have to get up at 5:30 again as I have all week long. Felt alright for the warmup.

Race went out and within the first quarter mile I was already feeling like I was working too hard. Didn't feel good at all. The slightest of hill just killed my body because I've been doing no hill training at all. Still moved up them fine, but there was no push or extra kick, I just sort of survived them.

Splits were:
5:11
5:10
5:19
5:33 (killer long hill)
5:35 (even longer, more steep hill)
5:18

Surprisingly the cold really screwed with me. Was thinking of things I say to guys on the team during races to figure out how to put moves and surges in. Legs were just frozen though from the cold air and I couldn't break out of the gear I was in. Even the final 100m was a slow downhill and I was watching the clock tick and I could not get my legs to kick or move any faster.

Calves were also burning really bad once I was only about 1.75-2 miles in the race. Have a feeling a lot of that was from standing all day at conferences. I could also definitely feel the effects of my lack of core work; my stomach got weak around mile 4 and my back even started hurting going up a hill (first in a long time for that). Stomach was really messed up most of the remainder of the day. Lastly, even that morning my voice was still cracking and broken up from yelling at conferences, so the dryness did not help my cause.

Not ecstatic with the run but also not at all disappointed given everything from the day before, the weather, and the hills. I think I could have probably gone about 20-30 seconds faster based solely on better pre-race prep. Still almost 1:40 faster than my last road 10k, and that was on a flat and fast course.
