Scandia Run 10K

August 14, 2010 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 70F, warm!

Comments:
Where to start with the EXCUSES?

1. I was REALLY TIRED all week. Maybe from the bike ride + long run last weekend.
2. Britt's been sick, so maybe I'M getting sick?
3. The constellation Orien was in the "two-thirds northwesterly quadrant".

I wanted to run in the low 32s today. Felt pretty good on the warm-up, but I knew how shitty I felt yesterday. I had some coffee and was well-hydrated. Wore the MUSHAs.

Got out pretty good -- better than last year -- at the start. I had some help early, but from 600m, on, I took the lead. Very little wind this year, which was great, but it was WARM: mid 60s/70 at the start.

Hit the mile nearly perfect: 5:13! I gave it a little umph after the mile to hold pace but once we got out of the shade and onto the "middle square" in suburban Junction City, I could feel the pace slow.

There was one guy on my butt and he stayed there about 600m past the two mile, which was in 5:16 (just shy of 10:30 split). Running north, the overtook me just before the turn back west. I was feeling OK but not great so I hung back behind him.

Right before the 3 mile a 3rd guy came up, this young guy who won the year before. By this time neither me or the other (older, skinheaded) guy were feeling great. We stayed bunched together through 3 (5:19) and 5K (16:25?) before young pug pulled away.

By this time I wasn't feeling great at all. I missed the 3-sided water stop (the water guy was busy feeding water cups to 9min pace runners at their 1.25 mile mark instead of handing us cups) and that was a buzzkill. However, the biggest buzzkill was the 180-degree cone turn around right before 4. I HATE THOSE. They ALWAYS KILL ME. And this one was no exception.

Once I turned the corner, I tried to pick up the pace, but young guy was long gone and "baldy" was pulling away. SUCKED. On top of that, we were now running with the breeze, so it got quite hot in a short time.

From there, the race deteriorated into a tempo run. I tried to focus on form and stay positive. I did get a water this time around, but not a lot of volume. We ran the long straight back towards the start (doubling back on the first 2K of the course). Hit the 5 mile in something shitty.

About a quarter mile later, I felt the heart go "pitter patter". My "SVT" (supraventricular tachycardia) felt like I was going to make an appearance -- suddenly it was REALLY hard to breathe. I wound up slowing to a light jog for 10 seconds to stave it off, and it worked, and I picked it back up.

Had a respectable last 1200m and something that resembled a hard finish to come in 3rd in 33:32. SUCKS. Young guy won in 32:47, which is what I would've run if I had simply held pace.

The splits (near as I can remember):

5:13
5:16
5:19
5:25?
5:31
5:34**
1xx
------ 33:32

(**including "stop and jog")

I wasn't particularly TIRED afterwards -- just BURNED OUT. So I grabbed some fluid and jogged in reverse to see Jeff at 600m to go, then kept going to run the last mile+ with Britt, who was NOT feeling well. I cheered and encouraged (and she told me to "shut up" -- classic runner!) to the finish.

After some rehydration, we did a slow jog for 10min, then called it a day. Stuck around for awards, where I got $15 worth of DariMart cash, which was key since my entry was $13. OH YEAH, PRO EARNINGS!

Britt and I drove back to town, SLOWLY cleaned up, then escaped the heat by heading to her parents' place on the coast in Yachats. It was AWESOME. Had the best Fish & Chips EVER at Luna's in Yachats.

Pretty OK day, even though the race went like shit.
