Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
Well my race this weekend was really disappointing. We had our home meet and it was my last time racing on my home course. I knew there was a kid from my meet last week that would be here that had won the 5k but I still was planning to go out and run my own race.
Right from the start I took off taking the lead and not looking back. I didn't care where anyone was in relation to me, I just wanted to keep moving and my pace up for that first mile, then try to keep going on for the second mile. I came through the mile in 5:08. However I forgot to figure in how difficult the second mile is based on how I went out. The first mile starts off going up a slowly rising quarter mile long hill, then flattens out and you loop past the starting line. The second mile you go up the same hill again, run on the flat again for about a quarter mile, but then run a very steep hill for about a quarter of a mile. I think this was my second time ever breaking 6 minutes on the second mile.
Because of my first mile, I tried to keep working up the hill once I passed the mile mark, but nearing the top I lost a little bit of my step and fell off my pace slightly. Once I was on flat ground I could feel myself relax a little more because I was breathing really heavy already, and was about to attack an even bigger hill. Approaching the bigger hill I was sure I was going to have to walk nearing the top I was so tired already. I ran it better than I thought I would but I was definitely hurting and losing the ground I had made.
As I kept running the course I was just exhausted and felt like I couldn't use anything because I was breathing so heavy and working so hard just to keep moving. At 2.5 miles I got passed like I was standing still. I must have had 50 meters put on me in less than 10 seconds, and it wasn't that I was going slow, he just passed me with that much speed. Everyone told me afterward he put in a huge charge to come back. I would regain my energy and move well, but then I would quickly dip out of pace again and feel exhausted. I would see myself making up ground, and then I would just fall off. My form stayed together and I looked great the whole race, but I just couldn't get moving and had no idea why.
After the fourth mile I saw a teammate uncomfortably close to me and I started working really hard, way before the finish. Coming down the final 50 meters of the finish I had nothing left in me to even kick in with. I was pushing to kick, and was kicking, but I'm lucky if it was the same speed I did my first mile in.
I finished second but with a time of 27:15. I think my splits were 5:08, 10:47, 16:12, 21:55, and then 27:15.
