Workout Fail

September 1, 2010 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Should have taken the day off. Monday, Tuesday and all of today were spent moving, lifting heavy things up and down stairs, etc. etc. I started the run exhausted and sore. Not like a "my muscles are sore from doing yoga and running a long run yesterday," more like a "every fiber in my body can't move right now from over-exertion." But since I seem to have some predisposition to never take a day off or cut a workout when its scheduled, I attempted the workout anyways after last night's tiring run.

Ideally I wanted to do 1K intervals on grass. I don't have a loop measured yet, and I didn't want to go to Bumpy and guess. I think its important that I know how fast I'm running at this point. So I was stuck to W River road. I came up with this. Run up hill (~250-300M) and do an 800M ROR on top at pace. 3 mins rest, run the 800M backwards slightly faster than 5K pace. Jog down hill, recover for 3 mins total, repeat above X3.

Rep 1
Hill: 1:37.5
800M ROR: 2:38 (2:54)
800M: 2:17 (3:06)

Rep 2
Hill: 1:32
-Done

First rep felt alright, the 800M on the way back was a bit too fast, but I hadn't gotten my pacing down yet. Halfway during my ROR on the 2nd rep, I pulled the plug. Multitude of reasons. General exhaustion, I knew my pace was going to fall drastically. The comcast guy stayed at my house until 6PM, so I had a 7 hour gap of no food before running. Terrible gut rot, forgot to eat tums. Every muscle in my body ached. I knew I wasn't getting any benefit from this. Just ran back home and unpacked more. This week is turning into an impromptu rest week. I need it right now, and its going to be too damn hard to get 75 miles in this week with chicago this weekend. I'm just lowering my expectations for this week, we'll see how it goes.

Things I learned from today:

-My core needs work. CC abs are now MANDATORY after every run.

-Need to start going back to yoga 2x a week. I feel better when I do that. When I get back from Chicago, I'm enrolling at Core Power.

-4PM snacks are now MANDATORY. I cannot run on an empty stomach, it kills me.

-No more workouts on W river road (except for tempos). Running 4:35 pace on W river road with a zoo of people was frustrating.

Also, I busted out the wave elixir betas today. The Alphas are getting beat up already. Even if I only use these shoes for 300 miles a piece, that is still worth the $20 I paid for them. Seeing how I get 450 out of $100, if I get 900-1000 miles out of $60, still a good deal. These Elixir IIIs just don't feel as durable as the Elixir Vs.
