West Park

October 13, 2010 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
This was the kind of race I knew I was capable of through the whole season. Even though this course had a lot of grass, it was super fast and everyone took advantage of that and busted out some great races. I'm much happier with this race than Bend. Mostly because I never got to really compete in Bend. Leading up to this race I said to myself that I was going to stay in the lead pack and keep the pace fast.

Mile 1: I got out really fast, mostly because of Dan doing what he usually does. There was a little confusion through the first couple of turns b/c the course wasn't marked well at all. So I stayed with the leaders as we ran up the side of the park with all the trees and when we turned to get onto the asphalt I took the lead. Held it through the first mile. I came across at 5:01.

Mile 2: Although my first mile was the fastest first mile I had ever run I didn't let it get to me. I was feeling really good. I wasn't thinking, wasn't analyzing what I was doing, I was just running. It was amazing. So I ran up the playground hill, through the bark, down the other side, and I had no idea where to go. I had to look over my shoulder to ask Bubba 'which way'. After that all my momentum was gone. I felt so much worse than I had just seconds before. I think that if I would have kept on course, I could have pulled away and quite possibly won the race. Soon after that horrible event I got passed by Bubba. I was tired and I thought "I have to do another lap around this thing?", but I stayed behind 1st. Came across mile 2 at a 10:22. 38 seconds faster than Bend.

Mile 3: This was a hard mile. I was just barely hangin on to the leader. I eventually got passed by Maag somewhere. Once I got off the asphalt I knew that there was only 1300 meters to the finish. I started to fade when we hit the tree path but quickly recovered and regained my lost ground on Maag. Through the baseball fields and Maag lost me, around the turn and I could make out the finish. I ran by Coach Rusty and he yelled out "15:50" and I was super pumped up to hear that. Unfortunately I was still super tired and didn't have any closing speed.

Finished 3rd. 35 second PR, and more than 2 min. faster than last year at this race.
