Exercise Type: Run
Weather: Clear: low 40s to mid 60s
Comments:
Marathon complete. Initially some dissapointment with losing time toward the end with cramps but with a couple of days I am gaining perspective and appreciation for the accomplishment.
Main thoughts from the marathon:
The race was warmer than I am used to as I do most of my training before the sun. I should probably work in some long runs at nearer race conditions.
Felt extremely good through the first 17 and was on about a 9:15 pace through that distance which was mostly flat. The hills for the course came on the back half and that is where I came apart. I wonder how I would have done on the back if I had kept to a 9:30 pace throughout the early miles.
Carrying two water bottles with hydration belt worked real well. I was able to have water in between water stops and could easily refill on water or gatorade at the stops. Wonder if gatorade rather than water in the first half would have helped with cramps. Can't be sure of exact amounts but I must have drank 80oz combined of fluids and still did not feel any need for a bathroom.
Took my 3 gels and then gathered 4 more on the course which I took in the last 8 miles. I have never taken more than 4 in a run before so the 7 I had in this one was probably excessive. Was trying anything to fuel the muscles and get rid of the cramping.
It is a pretty dark place in those last 8 miles to know that you are in desperate shape and still have a long ways to go. I am hoping that some increased training miles in addition to a flatter course will help me bring the time down in the next marathon.
Can't post on the race without noting the amazing support that I got from Barbara and my parents. They were a great encouragement throughout the race and Barbara prepared signs for the girls to cheer me on with.
