Today was the CMU vs. CWRU dual meet at home. I came in doing the same events as I did last year plus ancoring our DMR. Woke up with a little bit of a headache but it was okay after I ate stuff and drank some water. Went down to Fribley for breakfast. I was afraid I had eaten too close to race time cuz my stomach was kinda full when I was warming up but it all worked out in the end and it ended up being prefect because I was fine for the entire meet.
So in my pre race scheming I had laid out my plans for what would go down. I figured Nate Bussier would double on their DMR (ancor) and open mile so I would race him pretty quick and then the 8 was just extra. When Saturday dawned that turned out to not be the case. Nate lead off their DMR and then he came back in the open 8. That through me for a loop a little bit but it was also good practice to make up race stradgy on the fly.
DMR
Ran the 1600 ancor leg here. Grogan ran a great leg against Nate in the 1200. They went out really hard and Grogan hung real tough which was awsome! I think he split something like 3:11 to Nate's 3:03 which was raelly good that he kept it that close for us. Jim got the stick and made up something like three or four seconds which is ubsurd for a 400 leg. Passed the stick to Perisa and he made up even more ground running another awsome leg. He was really what made the relay for us. I got the stick a couple seconds down. Pretty much sure I had it when I caught their ancor on the first lap without really trying that hard. Just settled in after that and focused on his back. I've pretty much got their tartan logo thing memorized now. I feel kinda bad about mersciliously sitting on him but oh well. It is what it is. With about 450 to go I kinda half heartedly probed him a bit just to see what was up. He responeded so I tucked back in and coming out of the turn onto the backstretch with about 350 to go I went strong. Put like 20 or so meters on him in a lap. CoachL kept telling me to slow down but I wasn't really feeling that bad so I just kept going. With about 50 meters to go I took a galnce back saw how much of a lead I had and just eased it in from there. Still closed in something like 64. We ran the second fastest time in school history with 10:23! I'm really pumped to run against actual teams possibly in a couple weeks and then for sure at confrence. Hopefully we can make something awsome happen! After I got done Kurt told me my spli was like 4:21 or 4:22. really didn't believe that. I knew I was running 33's or 34's during the race so I thought there was no way. Also it just felt so easy it wasn't even funny. There were a few points during it that I was marginally uncomfortable but never really was I anywhere close to all out even when I went by I felt like I had another gear to go to if I needed it. I'm really excited about this! Hopefully I'll get in a race before confrence where I run against someone legitimate that will take it out hard and I can just chill off the pace at like 2:06ish and then roll it back. Even though I didn't believe it coach had me like 4:21.3 for the split.
Its still hard to believe how easy it was.
Splits like 2:11, 2:10
OPEN MILE
Ran the open mile 45min to an hour after the DMR. Really was just planning on sitting on Morhard the whole time and just kicking it in. Even though I know hes a legit 800 guy I felt that I could kick with him based on how the DMR went. At the gun some guy that I didn't know for them jumped into the lead. Just kinda let him go cuz I was sure he wasn't a player. I was right and he came back to us before the half. Basically jogged a half and a little extra. I had already run once and had to run again later so that was fine with me. At about 700 to go Graogan made a move and I picked it up pretty strong and kinda just drove on toward the finish. I'm really happy with how this went. Ran like 2:06 high for the final 800 and the final 2 laps were both run in 29.xx! This is such a huge confidence boost for me. To be able to kick like that shows that maybe I can do well in a tactical race like the UAA fast heat might be and that I'm in awsmoe shape. I'm really happy. Grogan ran awsmoe too for 3rd. And David Dixon had a nice PR of 4:38 including a nice 2 sec negative split which is awsome for him. Hopefully his foot will feel better soon! Overall good race for me. Won and it was awsome to run the way I did. Looking back I wish I would have pushed it more but I'll talk more about that later.
4:27.15 splits 2:20, 2:06 i think this is right
OPEN 800
Last event of the day. Kinda a joke that I ran all these events. So I finally ran against Nate here and got my ass kicked! But I held on for 2nd which is what I said I was going to do so I was happy. Actually a .1sec PR too which is good. A PR is a PR especially in the 3rd race in like 2 or 3 hours. I think I had like a half hour between the mile and this. Definitly less than the mile and the DMR. Lined up in the upper waterfall right next to Nate. Just kinda tried to get out right next to him and hang on. There was another guy from their team there but I kinda just tried to stay inside him and push him wide and he faded at about the quarter. out in 28-29 and quarter in 57-58 I think. Drew moved up on me somewhere in the middle which was good he ran well today. Just tried to hang out to Nate for as long as possible. He kinda picked it up it seemed with a quarter to go or maybe I was just tired but after that it was pretty much over. In the last lap I though I might have an off chance of catching him but not really. He was too strong down the stretch. He won I was 2nd in 1:58.71. That completes for real a goal I've had for myself since high school. I always wanted to run a mile in under 4:30 and a sub 2 8 in the same meet. I did teh 1500 equivlent at DePaw last year outdoors but I for real did it today. With the other 1600 split on top of it! I'm happy with it but I wish I was faster so I could have won this two and squeezed out a couple more points. Bobby Voight ran like a freking man in the 2nd heat to take 3rd. Hes rolling. Its too bad he didn't take Grogan's spot in the 800 cuz me and him could have rolled together and he would have for sure been sub 2. Still 2:00.1 is no slouch for running alone the whole way. Hats off to him for a great race!
Teamwise it sucks to lose to CMU especially by a point. That blows real hard. But I think we did awsome as a team! We hung tough in a lot of races especially the 5k which was awsome. I've never cheered so loud in my life. I feel like the team came together great. I know I had lots of people from field events and other things come up to me and ask how things were going and I tried my best to keep tabs on the other events. Everyone should hold their heads high and be proud of what we acomplished today. We kept it close even without Obi which is a big achomplishment in its self.
The only blemish for me today outside of the crappy one point loss was my open mile time. I let it lag early which is what I planned to do with my other races before and after it. I'm just worried that I'm gonna miss the fast heat of All-Ohio. I got in with a time comperable to this last year but I'm still worried. I'm sitting fifth on the list with one weekend to go but like the guy from Denison hasn't run yet and neither has Ty Griffin. I've heard Ty is hurt but I still feel like they both need is one time out and boom their in above me. I feel like I have a shot at winning this I just need to be in that heat. Plus I'm nowhere close to fast enough to make the UAA fast heat which is the big one. And I don't think I can do it alone in the All Ohio slow heat. Hopefully it'll all work out. I may talk to CoachL about jumping in another mile next weekend just to try to bring my time down like I know I can. Its just a matter of actually pushing from the gun. Not with 700 to go.
Not to be conceited or anything but looking ahead to next year I don't know what I'm going to do early. There was no one at Spartan Relays this year and with Nate gone next year for CMU... I don't know.
Overall I'm happy with how I ran toady. Great job to everybody on the team!
