Comments:
Today was the All-Ohio D3 track and field championships. I was scheduled to triple it up like I did last meet since there would be more time between events here. All told this was a long but satisfying day.
After getting there and chilling out for like 2 hours the day started with the distnce meadly relay.
Jim pulled us all in right before the gun which was really cool. I'm really comfortable with the group of guys running and I trust all of them with everything. The whole MD crew I trust anyone of them with any of the legs. That said Grogan's start was terrible. He got boxed straiht out and had to work pretty hard the rest of the way to get back in good position. Grogan ran great though and handed off well for us. Jim ran next and split his fastest of the year moving us up a place I think. Then Mike ran the best leg of the relay for us! He moved us up right into the lead. I was actually kinda hoping I'd get the stick just a step off the other guys shoulder but then I relized that Mike worked his ass off to get us there and I just went. Opened in 29.x and 61.7 which was kinda agressive but I wanted to keep the lead and not let anybody sit on me. Kinda just clicked 32's after that. Really didn't kick it in just kinda tried to mantain. Kinda pissed I didn't cuz we missed the school record by 2 sec. Also kinda pissed that none of the anchors tried to go with me. They all just kinda sat and raced for 2nd. I kinda consider this an insult to their teamates who worked really hard to put them in the position that they were in. Oh well its threr loss.
Got the "W" in 10:19.6 Splits: 3:13, 51.7, 1:58 flat, 4:17
The open mile
So about 3 hours after the DMR I ran again in the open mile. Watched the slow heat get won in like 4:24 and Grogan run well for 3rd there in 4:27 PR. I hoped this would encourage the people seeded lower to get after it early. Well that was wrong. Got out well. A guy tried to come in on me around the first curve and I moved him over. Thats a lie. I pretty much just shoved him with my forearm. CoachL told me I probably shouldn't do that again. After those fireworks I pretty much just setteled in on the back of Ankrom who grabbed the lead after I slowed cuz me and coach had talked before and I was going for the win plain and simple. Sat there for through the 8 pretty much. Went out really slow. Like 37 at the 200 and 69 at the quarter. Really just the first lap was slow cuz it picked up in the secound 200 and we just held pace running 2:13 for the half. Shane Brandt from OWU took it at about 700 to go. he went by pretty hard and I immedietly covered the move to stay in second. Heated up pretty good from there. Waited till 250 to go to make my bid for it. CoachL had said I was to make one big move with about a lap to go and never look back so thats what I did. Pretty much just coming out of the curve with 250 to go pulled the trigger and put everything I had into the last lap. Ended up pulling it out but I was definitly scared coming into the final turn that bad things were going to happen. Closed in 2:05. Don't know the exact splits. Hopefully jeff emails me them soon. I'm kinda glad the race went out the way it did. I never really felt relaxed like I have been in other races and I feel like going out slower helped with that. That said I aslo wish it would have been more evenly paced so that possibly the time would have been faster. I feel like if I get in a race where I get taken out in say 2:06 or 2:07 I could try to even split and run a prov time. Hopefully the UAA race will set up like this. Turlip ran 4:06 out in Boston yesterday so he'll probably demolish but I think I can run with anybody else in the field so I guess right now my plan is to let Turlip and anybody that tried to go with him if he goes go and then see if I can't run even and kick people down that went out suicidal.
Overall this race I'll take. Its my first PR of the year which I'm stoaked and a win is a win. I'm undefeated in mile races this year and with one weekend to go I'm sitting 7th in the UAA which should put me in the fast heat which is what I've been shooting for all year.
Open 800
Pretty bad. I learned one thing. 4:18 takes a lot more out of me than 4:27 no matter how the race is run. Just never felt like I could move. I wish I could have forced myself to hang on to the pack in my heat a little better but oh well. This was the race I thought about the least if at all coming in so I'm happy I got through it and beat anyone coming off my 2 miles. I'm not exactly happy with it but it was okay overall.
Oveall this meet was a good day for me. I'm happy with how things went. I did my job and got my points for the team. Coming in I had thought about getting the 2 wins but I guess I never really thought it would actually happen. So that was really good. The team got more points than it did last year even without Obi which was good. I just with there had been more competation in the DMR coming down the stretch.
Shout out to Brooke and Corey for PR's in the mile, the girls DMR for school record and 2 sec off prov, Bobby and Matt for stepping up in the 4x4, Chris Wade for a big PR in the 5k, and Carter for running tough.
