Comments:
Ran the 5k tonight. Pretty freaking awesome.
So came into this really with no expectations. Me and Thea made a pact for me to break 15:30 and her to break 19:30. But I've been doing workouts at like 15 flat pace and I'd felt comfortable running that pace so that was in the back of my mind.
Came in really relaxed and I think that was the key. Didn't really have like splits I needed to hit that we talked about. No pressure to score for the team like at confrence or a time that I had to hit to make the meet feel worthwile. I just got to go out there and race and damn how it went either way.
So up until my race people were running awesome. Brooke and Cindy both ran great with Cindy like a sec off her PR. Us people running the 5k had set up a little conttest about PRing, we didn't really figure out the details but after the girls ran I figured I'd already lost since Corey Bowen PRd by like 47 sec. Justine destroyed everyone pr'd by 7 sec and provd, and Thea held up her end of the pact and prd by like 18 sec running 19:11. So I wanted to keep the ball rolling and run well myself.
So I started running. I wanted to compete at the front even though the top seeds were like 15 flat so I just kinda settled in where I felt comfortable in about 8th place. I had in the back of my head at this point that 72 flat per 400 was 15min pace. So I kinda just settled in.
I was running on like guys shoulders for a couple laps until this guy who had won the steeple earlier let me in on the inside. So I thanked him and jumped in there and again settled. At this point I noticed he was apparently pacing someone I couldn't see behind me. He was calling splits and just reasuring about the pace and that there was a lot of race left. He seemed to be shooting to run about 15min pace. About now we got to the mile in about 4:48-4:49.
In the second mile I still felt pretty good. I knew I was on good pace becasue they had a clock set up at the 400 and I knew I was clicking off the 72's most of the way. About lap 5 or 6 coming onto the home stretch I relized that to stay in my rythum I was going to have to pass people in front of me. It really wasn't me picking it up at all it was just I was in a really good rythum running where I was at and I didn't want to mess it up by slowing down. So I passed them going into second (there was a guy who like flew out lap 2, he was maybe like 10 meters up at this point). The minute I dropped back into lane 1 I thought to myself: Why did you do that!??? Honestly I thought I was gonna die masively. Everyone was gonna pass me and I would be reduced to dragging myself around the track the last few laps. But I felt pretty good and I wasn't gonna let anyone pass me easily so I kept going.
I lead for maybe a lap or two I don't really remember. I didn't really try to catch the guy who had flown out early but I did and so I moved around him into first still running really good in rythum. I got passed by a couple guys from Rotchester and the guy that was pacing and the dude from VMI that he was pacing for shortly after that. I just hung with them. We got to 2 miles in somewhere between 9:37 and 9:40 (small victory a new 2 mile PR).
So with 4 laps to go I had another thought of that I was gonna die again. The only 73 of the race had happened in there but I knew I was still running really well. The anouncer said we were around 9:03 at 3k and CoachL was saying I was running like 15:05 pace so I knew I was on. The last mile is really a blur. I can't really remember passing people or picking it up or getting strung alone but somehow with 600 to go I'm in second place and rolling after this guy who had abandoned the VMI guy he was pacing for and was yelling at me anc pulling me along. I just tried to stay with him. I never relized how much I picked it up at that point. I remember on teh back stretch thinking for like 2 sec that maybe I could take him... that was short lived. He burned me down the stretch. I still ran a 31 sec last 200.
This race was awesome. Huge negative split which bodes well for the future hopefully and it just felt so good running it. It was awesome to finally have a breakthrough performance again. After indoors I was feeling a little run down and not really knowing what outdoor would bring but after this weekend I'm really excited about what I can do the rest of the season now. Especially at 5k.
14:53.37
Splits: 72, 72, 72, 72, 72, 72, 73, 72, 71, 72, 71, 66, 31
Miles: 4:48, 4:49, 4:42, 31
I think the last 1000 was sub 2:50. The last 600: 1:37.
Prov is 14:45.00 and it'll probably take 14:35 to make the dance. I'm excited going forward.
SUB-15 wow. I've thought about it for awhile now but to really do it is something else. For real. Its like the same thing with the sub 4:20 in the mile. Only fast people run that and I never really considered myself in with that company until now. I still don't really believe I ran that fast.
I gotta keep up the looseness before the race. I was really reaxed and stuff and I believe that really helped. Now all there is left to do is move that rythum pace from 72's to 71's and hopefully to 70's at some point.
Still don't believe it.
