Exercise Type: Run
Weather: sunny, 50's
Comments:
Not the greatest run, but I can be happy with finishing where I did after considering how I felt. Had a little trouble right in the beginning hitting the pace (6:52), which gave me no confidence for the rest of the day. Hit 6:56-6:58 for the 1st few miles but it should have felt easier. By mile 8, legs felt tired and the rest of the race was kind of a struggle. Had to work most of the race, whereas I remember previously feeling great for the 1st half of the race. Some theories include:
1. not enough good mileage this winter
2. not enough quality work
3. downhill start seemed to tire the quads
Can't blame the course/weather too much, the elites were super fast. In the end, the winter (snow, skiing) probably hurt the most and I didn't get into a good training schedule until very late in the winter. Still in summary, only 3 mins off my PR with poor training. I should have recognized my ability earlier in the racve and slowed down to enjoy the day. Cramps were better this time, only 1 little bout with right hamstring and it happened with less than a mile to go. Used Endurolytes and Perpetuem concentrate as fuel, with 1 powergel at 17 miles. Still not sure if I've got the fueling down. Might just try Hammer Gel or GU next time. I've done plenty of long runs with only Gel and it seems to give me better pick-up.
