Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
Real windy day down at Oberlin. Weather kinda turned to shit at the end of the week, so we saw this coming. Had a hard time getting to sleep last night too because my throat was kinda scratchy. Tired when I woke up, but just chilled on the short bus ride.
Got there really early, so we sat around. Legs felt pretty good. Saw Erin and Craighead which was pretty cool and chatted with then. Pa showed up right before the warm up. We went out on the outer loop, it looked pretty good, the fields were so windy, much worse. Headed back into the field house to stretch and spike up.
Got some drills and stretching out at the course, the wind was picking up, times were probably out the window, so we had to just run fast. Peed real sketchily in the trees right before the gun went off. They didnt really give us much warning. I didnt even know we were starting. I was actually taking my shorts off when the gun went. In a fluid motion i ran towards the line and started racing... Knew I was supposed to be out in front. Wyatt and I started moving up, got pinched at the bottleneck, and literally started trotting. This was a bad thing. We came through the mile at 5:30 i think, not what we wanted. Started going for it, trying to pick it up. Maybe settled in the fields, it was tough with the wind. Barnes thought that I looked relaxed, which seems realistic when you are going 5:40 pace. I see what he is saying though, got to stay focused in the middle miles and fight more. It was tough being so far behind. I felt like I had the fight that I have had for the past few races, but spaced out a little in the middle. Paul got me at the 5k, and we started to pick it up again. I didnt see him fall off, but by the 4 I was near Bernstein, and I really wanted to beat him, so I went for it. Passed a lot of people near the finish, but my kick fizzled out a little... I wish I could have been up with Peter from the beginning. I learned from this race, that I can be up there and I need to be. Time was whatever, but I think I gained some ground on Peter and David. kinda angry that I have run gutsy races, and not produced a 26:30, but thats XC. Finished 6th.
Tired afterward for sure. I had a stomach ache after too. Craighead had a great race and I got to see him sweet. Overall, there were goods and bads with the race. I am glad it wasnt a total disaster for me though. Pumped for conference, the step up for outdoor.
Cooled down random places, stretched a little and then talked to Barnes and Paul. Nice chat, good to listen.
Went home with Dad, so I missed the speech on the bus, I am not sure how the rest of the team feels, but I will find out because we have some talking to do. We need to know this lesson from Oberlin. No Excuses
