August 12, 2012 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: overcast, periods of drizzle
Comments:
The course was changed to a faster (and safer) version this year whereby it started and ended behind the boathouse. This eliminated the need to go up and turn around on "Chicken Hill."
It was really only myself and PP contending to win. That was a real shame because of the great conditions we were graced with this morning.
I took the lead on the start and PP caught me before the first right turn. He got to the top of the only hill before me but I was on his heels as I never wanted to let him drop in the first k. I felt good and relaxed at that point.
He said to me "Don't be afraid to go for it" and that convinced me to start racing. I passed him there and tried to keep moving until I could not hear his footsteps anymore. I did not want him to be close to me as I respect his finish too much!
I may have taken the foot of the gas as I neared the turnaround point. After that, I did work hard coming back down the Boulevard. But I was off my desired pace by about a second and a half.
I finished strong in 15:58. I do regret asking DB "whereishe? whereishe? whereishe?"; that was poor sportsmanship. Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, we do things that aren't so... noble.
Had a short cooldown with JW (and Benson!) who later gave me a ride home. Got back to CC's to watch the end of the Men's Olympic Marathon.
Now I feel lonely. Overwhelmingly so.
Perhaps I just need to eat.
