Comments:
Potomac Invitational today from 8 to 3:30. I ran in a completely stacked 1600m field (Zeke, Tristan, Tai, Aaron, Joey, Hale Ross and two others) seeded last, fulfilling that prediction quite well, beaten by people in the previous heat. It was a rather humiliating affair on the whole. We once again warmed up too early and got ourselves to the line at 11:20. The gun went off and everyone zoomed away and I tried to zoom with them. Not so! I came through the first lap in 70 and a reasonable distance from my teammate, not a bad pace at all. Soon, however, I found myself alone again as usual, running into the intense cross-wind on the back stretch. 800m 2:27. I pushed the next lap, always intending to PR with no one to beat at this point. Anthony even said as I came around that I was running with "powerful form" and "looked strong." I don't know a 1200m split, but possibly 3:47. Still thinking things were going rather well, I went into the last lap and tried to kick, if you could even call what I do at the end of races by that name. It was not until I had 200m to go that realized how bad things had gotten, with the wind in my face again and saw the 4: change to a 5:. Immediately afterwards Anthony told me to be patient and that I'm doing everything right, but later admitted that it was a "godawful" race and kept reminding me, as he reminds the rest of the team that PRs will come at the end of the season. Gabe also asked how my race went and I replied as I feel now, that "I don't even race, I just do workouts." I've always been just fine 3-4 minutes after every event I've run this season: the 800m at Potomac, the 4x4, the 4x8 and 4x1600m at Loyola, the 32 at Sidwell, all of which total to just .7 seconds of time off previous PRs; Mark told me beforehand he wanted me to have an ugly last lap and collapse at the finish line and I'd have loved to have that too, so in that respect it's all my fault. On a more positive note, boys and girls won the meet, Griffin and Aidan went 1, 2 in the 3200m, gapping the field. More scintillating performances from DZ, the Joneses, Hannah and the girls 4x4 which won by a huge margin. I did some extra miles around the campus later in the afternoon. For all my ranting and raving, in the spirit of Anthony's speech afterward, I must say that there was fun in all this, but with regard to my race, I haven't figured out what or where that fun was.
