Exercise Type: Run
Weather: Dry, felt like mid-70s but possibly much hotter
Comments:
I am now in Ephraim, Utah, two hours away from Salt Lake City or any civilization at all, for the New York Jazz Symposium summer program. Naturally, I brought my running shoes with me. Often times at camps the runner must persuade, negotiate or even plead with stern, uncomprehending staff just to eek out a 20 minute run; such was not the case. Following a never-ending day, one blurred and hazed by a six-hour night of sleep, and made frightening by the nagging left shin in flip flops, I returned to the dorm from the music building, put on my clothes and waltzed right off the premises, unmolested. Easy days are perhaps the most difficult thing; I overestimated the 5610 feet above sea level and thought that any effort would be reduced to a crawl. But directly I started I found it was not so bad and ran nearly to the end of the main road, East 100, then navigated around the campus of Snow College, stopping by the track at which I had glanced throughout the day, finding the gate locked. 20 minutes into the run the sky had darkened, but everywhere in my field of view were looming mountains. It was so eerily quite and empty that I had never felt more a stranger in my own country. Starting to tire, I found a lawn on which to do eight striders. I jogged for a minute then did the Boardman routine with 15 pushups, 80 backwards leg lifts and a one minute superman hold. I also believe I've found the cause of the groin strain to be repeated flutter kicks and their adjuncts. I will not wear flip flops for the rest of the week to combat the shin pain. I feel only relief now that I won't have to sacrifice a week of quality running in exchange for a week of quality music.
