Bumped into JK on the warm up which was nice.

Here's the email I sent RW:

It certainly wasn't my best day!

The first two miles or so felt easy and effortless and at that point I had a lot of confidence. There was a group just ahead of me (consisting of DF, JA, PP, DM, DM, BA).

At around 3 miles, IR caught up to and passed me and we were together for a mile or so. By the time we got to Mary Queen of the World, he was ahead by about 10 metres. So I said to myself "catch up to him on this downhill" as there's quite a long slope going by Topsail Cinemas as you near the half-way point of the course. And I did. But not without an effort. I stayed with him going stride for stride as we went by the flat stretch that passes the Village Mall. But when we got to that one hill after Road DeLux, IR suddenly gapped me by 30 m by the time we hit the top. That hill sucked all my energy and confidence out; by this time, it was almost 30 degrees. Normally, I try to put in a surge at the top of the hill to get my rhythm back and drop anyone chasing me. However, this time I could not pick up my pace any more than I could lift a Buick. I remember thinking "If anyone passes me now, I will be unable to respond." No sooner had I processed this thought, KB and PB both floated on by me seemingly without any effort. I was in trouble.

I tried keeping with them but I only did so for about half a mile or less. The B's would finish a full minute ahead of me.

The last 4 miles, I more or less survived rather than raced it. I just kept trying to maintain my form even though I was in pain.

Although I told my girlfriend to let me know how far behind the nearest runner was (the crowds get so loud you can't hear people coming from behind) she didn't do so when I passed her near Alison Whelan's offices. Luckily, I somewhat recovered for the downward part after the Basilica. That was lucky because LC (who is far and above the greatest x-c skier NL has ever produced) was only 3 seconds behind me. I had no idea he was there.

At no point did I feel like I was too hot. But when you finish soaking wet obviously the heat was a factor; everyone's times were slow."

No cool down.
