Comments:
Big day today, this'll probably be on the long side.
Got ok sleep the last couple nights, but could have been worse. Luckily, the race was in the afternoon, so I got to sleep in a bit, as well as get a full breakfast! Napped on the bus, and when the time got around to the warmup, I was feeling pretty fresh. Getting to the line, and having Abdallah do the profession cheer, I was pumped and ready to go. We got out, and as expected, it was really crowded. There were a few times I got stuck behind a mass, so I tried working my way out to the side of the pack. I was rolling pretty comfortably when Mike reminded me not to get out too quick. I checked around me, eased up a bit, and grouped up.
Splits (roughly estimated): 5:45, 11:50, 18:00, 24:05.
Got through the first mile right on target pace, but since it's All-Ohio, everyone around us went out too fast and started dying, slowly. So I started to move up on the group. I kept this up, and hitting the 2 mile under 12, I was actually excited. No overly positive split this time. Even if it was pretty big. But I kept pushing it up, and eventually Ryan popped up next to me. We spent the next couple miles working with each other, moving up, trading off, communicating well. That was awesome. By the fourth mile, I wasn't feeling too optimistic about getting a good time, but I knew I wasn't going to let anyone pass me. Made contact with Marc about that point, but he pushed on ahead. Pushed the last mile hard though, and coming into the last straightaway, I knew I had to give it everything I had. So I sprinted my brains out, and passed a bunch more people. Almost caught Marc, but I was a second short.
So legitimate 8k PR today, not sure how much to count last week's MLK run, but I'll take today. I was hoping to be quicker, but I'm not really sure I did anything wrong today. Maybe push harder in mile 2, but that's about it. Had a good mental game today, every time I felt myself tensing up or feeling tired, I just reminded myself to relax and stay loose. And that definitely helped. If I can do Oberlin mentally as well as I did today, I should see a great time there.
