Sahil and I drove to the EHS Winter classic. Because of the circuitous route I took, I was beginning to wonder whether going to the meet would be a waste of time. But I am so fond of the Flippin Fieldhouse that I could not in good conscience stay away. The rest of the team ran pretty well. A third of the way into the meet I went out into the fading light and started running around the track, thinking I would take a few laps of warmup and then go explore the Episcopal campus. Soon enough, however, making a solemn vow not to look at my watch more than three times on the run, I had "one more lapped" myself to a 27 minute run. Keeping a consistent pace, I figured, "Well, when I reach thirty minutes, I will only have five minutes until I just have ten minutes left of running." So I started the mind game of fixing my eyes on a point and not taking them off until passing it, keeping my head up and not slowing down, although running straight into the wind. It became all about focus, a mental practice run for my 3200m next week. When I came home later, I did 1:30 planks, leg lifts, clams, 1-minute six inches, flutters and scissors and 2x30 pushups, making sure not to look at my watch too much during timed exercises. As Hoppie Groenwald tells Peekay in The Power of One, "First with the head, then with the heart."
