Loyola Blakefield Relays: the third go-round.
After a fitful night of sleep caused by my late, spring break hours, I reported to the bus. Yesterday Anthony had made the decision to put me in the 4x800m. I did a thorough warmup, but could not stop worrying about the hand-off from Evan finishing the DMR 400m, which I knew one or both of us would mess up. Although he tripped on the drain next to the track and somehow ended up dragging his spikes across my right shoe, tearing it open and dropping the baton, I picked up the damn thing and started running 10-15 meters behind a guy from Calvert. The shoe stayed on and I was out nicely, if alone. In long socks, hat and gloves, I came through the first lap in 64 and was unable to have the blazing last 300m I had planned. It would have been great to run 2:10, but I have learned over and over again not to expect a good 800m time. I bandaged my foot before the anchor leg of the 4x800m a little over an hour later. It FELT better, though two seconds slower (no splits yet). After the first 200m, I passed two people, then spent the rest of the time slowly walking down another Calvert guy and outstepping him in the last three meters thanks to Tristan (whose back-up spikes I wore) yelling at me, "All that time you spend in the gym, Liam, this is what it's for!". Following a short stretching break and a trip to the Loyola trainer who gave me slightly more effective bandages, and some adhesive for the four-inch gash in my foot, it was time to warm up for the 4x1600m. I learned during this time that I would run the 4x400m. Anthony told us (Kravitz, moi, Frankie, Zeke) to use whatever mind games we had developed to pace ourselves through each of the four laps. I split 2:33 (75, 78), 2:33. In addition to Mark's censorship of any frustration, Anthony also said not to get worked up about the lonely 5:06. In the 400m, I outstepped the same guy I beat in the second 8 and for once ran faster than 62. A good track workout, but one that has left me with 13 stitches in my right foot. Boys got 10th overall.
