Race day. Amazing weather. Got a good night sleep and enough time to eat breakfast in the morning. I biked up there this year, it was a little bit chilly when I headed out but the sun warmed it up. Was kinda quiet when I got there, but they seemed a little unorganized. Then a ton of people showed up like 30 minutes before the start and it got pretty crazy. Not any PSE people I was kinda there by myself this year. I started recognizing some faces though, people I knew were faster than me, and started rethinking my race plan a little bit. I didnt expect to be too far up this year like I was last year. Did a little warm up around the block in my flats. They felt comfortable, but my legs were still a little heavy, basically felt bearable since I had on lighter shoes. Got back to the park and did some drills and striders and that felt like it loosened things up, but I didnt feel amazing. When we got to the start line it was pretty crowded, there were a lot more people than last year actually. I was still not quite up near the front since I didnt expect to be in the top group. The starting horn didnt really go off the first time so it was a kinda sketchy start. I got stuck behind a bunch of little kids and had to blow by them as we got onto Pleasant St. There it already opened up nicely. There were two guys way ahead, a chase pack, then me sitting in about 10th. Fine spot I thought. I like the beginning of the course heading up through town. I held a nice solid pace up then coming down to the base of Whitney a few people passed me and I stayed steady, since I didnt want to pound down the hill. 1st mile in 6:00 pretty reasonable didnt go out too hard. Next we went up the hill and I put on the surge, passed a few people and sat right around 10 seconds behind the chase pack. I could see the guy in second still. A few of the chase pack fell off on the hill and I caught them. At 2nd mile at the top of the hill right at 12:20, so slower pace than last year but good consistency up the hill. We all spread out at that point. I could see 3rd 4th and 5th all infront and I was way ahead of 7th. After the hill, gut started tightening up and legs felt heavy. Coupled with no one to run with I had a hard time keeping the pace. Basically let the hill do the work for me, cruising back down to Kendrick Park. Coming around the turn and into the finishing stretch didnt feel like I had much at all left to sprint in, which was kinda disappointing, but I really felt like I just wanted to finish. Didnt really look at the clock or care about my time because I just felt like I was kinda drained going into the race. Finishing time definitely confirms that the Dash and Dine was short haha. I double checked my HR after I finished and it was near tempo pace, so thats reassuring.
Essentials: Stretch
Kinda walked around got some water and caught my breath. Did another loop of for the cool down nice and easy just to shake any tightness out. I did a bunch of stretching here and there after grabbing some food. Ankles felt fine didnt notice them at all. Probably most sore from the hill, in my quads and such. Felt pretty tired afterwards. I didnt think I won an award or anything but I did want to see the results, so I sat around in the back when they did the results. Turns out this year, they gave prizes to the top three, then did age groups. I was surprised when they did call my name for the 20-29, I had to hop up and run over, it was kinda awkward but still very cool! Got some achievement with a slower time than last year after I felt "meh" about the race. I actually was 6th overall and 3rd in my age group but the other 2 in front of me were 1st and 3rd. After that I biked back home. Satisfying morning activity on another beautiful morning. Still getting used to the matzah, just feeling hungry all the time. Running the race takes even more out of ya. Not sure if any more races are coming up but hopefully as the summer gets started I can get into a good mileage routine. I feel like it was interrupted in April and hasnt been that consistent (since I only ran a few times since the Dash and Dine). Bring on the good running weather now though!
