Amherst 10 Miler

February 26, 2017 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
I was exhausted after getting back from UAAs last night, slept over 10 hours. It was a blast though felt right back into my element. Honestly helping Coach with the splits and giving the kids the race strategy was so fun. I realize how much I missed it now. CKell better watch himself Im gonna take his job. Anyways after resting up I could chill a little bit since the race wasnt until 11. The weather plummeted after the storm last night and it was cold and windy this morning. Decent running weather but I wasnt exactly prepared for it. Biking up to the Middle School was chilly. There were a ton of racers that came out today and everyone was real pumped and excited. I didnt know what to expect honestly with such low mileage lately. I just knew I could go out and run and push myself and see what happens. No Marco this year so I just warmed up myself, did some drills, and planned it out so I wasnt too cold too close to the start. The course changed from last year, now start at ARHS and end in the parking lot of Wildwood. Starting out I was in the back because I knew going out too fast would ruin the entire race since I dont quite have the strength underneath me. It was crowded and hectic back there. People were running all sorts of weird paces. I stuck around here and there, it was so crowded that I missed the first mile mark to see my pace, so I just kept going with what was comfortable. Once we got out onto the roads, the wind started picking up. It was brutal in some spots, cold and slowing us down. Had to either draft or fight through it. Got my 3 mile mark time and it was consistent and pretty close to my pace from last year. I was pretty stoked with that. Decided I was feeling good and I should try to hold it from there. At 3 is when the hills start, and people slowed down a lot climbing up to the reservoir. It was tough but I felt more tired on the downhill and flats after the hill. Slowed down a little bit on the 4th and wanted to get back on pace, so I picked it up and tried to move up a little. Had a few people go with me and that helped. From there, kept hitting the pace real well and feeling good. Legs were starting to get heavy but I could still hold the pace and move on. The hill in the last 2 miles hit everyone hard. Its gradual and you dont really realize it but I was preparing myself to get up it. It went well, but then at the 9 mile mark, we went up another hill and the wind was coming straight at us. That sucked it was the worst of the worst. I felt myself slow down to a crawl. Its tough cause it was the last mile and I really wanted to try and keep my pace that I was clipping off so well. Really struggled but tried to dig deep. Once we got to Wildwood Cemetery, it was just down the hill and loop the parking lot. I knew I needed to do something of a kick in order to make it in on time. People were passing me on the down hill also, so once we hit the flat I threw whatever my legs had in them. It was a slow kick since they were primed up for the pace, not a sprint. Somehow had enough juice to get in under 7 pace for that last mile and break 70. Overall that was awesome for me considering the state of my training. No way I though a pace and time like that was going to be manageable. At no point in the race did I feel like breaking down completely. I just didnt feel like I could have gone much faster for longer. Good race and good benchmark. This is a tough course too for a road race, but a fun one. I was pretty fried at the end. Walked a little and got my orange slices, but legs really rocked up and felt heavy. Made my way back to the bike to bundle up since it was so windy, then did what I could for a cool down. I had to walk back to the Middle School I was so tired. From what I got, my splits where: 3 mile - 22:52, 7:19, 6:50, 6:57, 6:42, 6:47, 6:41, 6:57. Final time 1:09.

Essentials: Stretch

Made my way inside and stretched out. It was also good to just sit a little bit. It was crowded in there with the awards and lunch. I was starting to get cold and knew I had to bike home so I packed up and headed back. Biking back was brutal. Hand freezing and my quads were so so sore. Maybe fitting most of my weekly mileage into one day is a bad idea, but it was fun and its great to get out there with the running community and enjoy some "nice" New England running weather. Glad I was able to get myself up and run this this morning. They do a great job this is a race you dont want to miss. Race shirt and hat are dope perks as well.
