Daffodil 5k

April 29, 2018 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Opted for the 5k this year considering my recent training. I was looking forward to racing actually. I have done minimal mileage, no speed, and barely any strength, so this is a total baseline race. It was raining this morning, not significantly, and it wasnt too chilly. Biked in and got my legs moving. When I got there, it was pretty deserted, and the rain was picking up. I was worried that there would be a small showing. I went and did my warm up first. Legs were tight, not as loose as I would have liked for a race, and I just felt stiffened. The rain really started to pick up. Once they called us to the line, there was a big crowd forming, so that was nice. Rumors were swirling that the course had changed due to a fire on main st. I always like the start up through town, so I was a little disappointed. Instead, we went down Triangle and popped out right on Main. The confusion carried over to the start. I didnt even hear a gun go off, people just started shuffling forward. A huge group of little kids went out to the front and I stuck behind them a little bit, but as we swung around to the traffic circle, things spaced out. I was around a small pack with less than 10 people ahead of us, holding a good pace. Once we hit the hill, it spaced out and I started to pass people. I was yo-yoing with one guy as we went up the hill then turned onto Strong. Honestly, didnt feel too winded at that point, mostly limited by leg speed and leg strength. The guy I was with pulled ahead and I stuck back with another guy who looked like he knew what he was doing. Found out he was splitting off for the 10k, so I had it alone down then hill and back into the park. The woman ahead of me was WAY ahead, I had no shot of getting up to her, and I couldnt see anyone behind me, so I tried to stay up straight and strong and bring it in. Felt like it was just long enough to manage. The 10k would have been pretty brutal... Finishing up I could tell I was soaked and the rain was coming down. Couldnt really see the clock, but was not impressed with the time at all. All I could hope for was an age group placing. After finishing, there was not many other runners around. I paced a little trying to stay loose. I felt gassed but not exhausted. My legs were just to inexperienced to push the pace to where I am more accustomed to. I also didnt want to be too wet so I started a cool down to Fearing. Stuck around for results, at which time the rain was really pouring, and it was cold. I got soaked out there and was not looking forward to the bike back. Found out I got 4th overall, 3rd male, good enough for a award. Snuck right in ahead of a bunch of 11-14 year olds who were all right behind me. Haha. The bike back was miserable, I was frozen down at that point, just looking forward to getting back inside.

Essentials: Stretch

Not a great stretch while waiting around in the rain. I did drills, legs swings and striders beforehand, and that helped me get along the course. To be honest, legs felt even better when I was done. They felt worked, aged, experienced. Thats better than starting off totally stiff. Overall happy I got out there and felt comfortable in a classic race, not too pleased with the time, but thats what I earned for what I brought. I am also happy a lot of people came out in such nasty weather to support a cause and run a little bit.
