Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
2 mile shakeout in the morning, 2 mi warmup, 4 mile race, 3 miles down.
Was super excited for this race. Goal was to run each mile between 5:30 and 5:40, probably recognizing that I'd slow down a little bit. I went out in 5:38, feeling controlled, then followed with a 5:37. Good consistency, and well within my goal pace, but I slowed down a lot in mile 3. I think I ran a 6:05 or something terribly slow like that. Luckily, I had a good kick in me, and finished in 5:45. I felt focused in that third mile, and tried to run with this Swat guy. I caught up to him from pretty far back, and I should have tried to run past him instead of with him when I caught up to him. That's where I think some of the time went. Eventually caught up to some more Swat guys who pulled away at the end of the race.
Also, I have a couple of pretty large blisters on the balls of my feet on the inside portion that I didn't know about until afterwards. It just felt like there were some rocks in my spikes about halfway through the race and so I just pressed through and tried not to think about it. The blisters must've popped during the race, and so I went to see Curt afterwards and everything is under control.
Overall, I think this was a good, focused effort for me. I've got to get better at racing the middle of races, although I'm happy with my consistency for the first two miles. I think I'll only get stronger as we move up to the 8k in a couple of weeks. I ran this 35 seconds faster than last year on what is probably a slower alumni loop than last year so that's a plus.
