Met up with Wolin and My Son at 8:30. Got full warmups in etc. before Jackson Todd, Jeff, Mark, Jacob, Anthony, and my fam showed up. We got things going soon after 9:30. I was to run the 5000, hopefully PRing; which at Dellington is 15 laps plus an extra 200m (which Anthony marked off beforehand). My Son (who paced m, trialing a 1600m ), Wolin (who was gunning for a 3200 PR), and I all started together. My first lap was a bit slow and I fell off pace even more before I crossed 1600 in 5:26. I chipped away at 80 sec per lap before Todd hopped in and gave me incredible motivation to keep pushing. Gaba also cheered me on well from the backstretch. I knew it was a longshot at a PR when I crossed 3200m in 10:46, but with the help of pacers I maintained the pace. My form was breaking down and my mentality was caving too. The last 960m felt like an eternity. I kicked especially hard from 200 out (apparently it was 32 seconds or something) and crossed the line with what felt like an empty tank. I was mad disoriented and beyond exhausted, but I was overwhelmed with joy that so many had come out to see Arthur, Ethan (who ran 11:21!), and me run. Cooled down and stretched, chatting to Wolin and Gaba before heading home.
Today, I counted a member of each class from 2017 to 2023. This goes to show that even in the darkest of times for our sport, our community, and the world, the institution of GDS Running runs deep enough to bring out people to watch the team work hard when there really could be no reason to do so. Today serves as a prime example of what a proper team is supposed to look like.
