May 30, 2010 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: cloudy, 60
Comments:
Great conditions and I felt pretty good at the start. Combined with the crowds and excitement, went out a bit fast and had trouble pulling back. Went through the half in 1:30, probably a few minutes fast. Also, had a little stomach distress that affected how much I ate during the race, for which I blame the resulting leg cramps that hit from about mile 22 on. In the future, would pull back 1-2 minutes slower through the half (1:32), take GU or Perpetuem every 30 minutes and then hope for the best. Still a success, qualified for Boston!
After a day to think, I've got some ideas:
1) Add some more hill work early in the program to build strength for speed. I was on the treadmill a lot and probably didn't do the required hills properly.
2) Too much sugar in the morning. Drank that gatorade prime 15 mins prior.
3) Should do a sweat-test to gauge how much fluid I lose during hard effort. Then I'll have a better idea what I need to take in per hour.
4) chase gels with H2O only
5) more pace runs, which could help maintain the proper pace and get my body tuned in.
Still, should try to be happier. I live to race another day and feel emboldened by stories of people dropping 25 mins from previous marathons. It's possible for me too and I'll benefit from the experience and accumulated mileage over the past year and future miles for the rest of the year. May consider a fall marathon.
