Nice recovery run; tried to get everyone to think about how their Caldwell race went.
Then I started thinking about the question: What is your goal when you step to the line to race? I wondered if I had well thought-out goals for races when I ran in high school. I don't think I really did, I wish I had reflected about my running more when I was younger.
Then I thought, if I can't remember any clear goals I had, what was my motivation? What kept me running? The simple answer is I had found something I was good at. I enjoyed running hard and competing. I wanted to run fast for my teammates and my coach. I thirsted for the satisfaction of knowing I did my best. I'm not sure if I really thought about this long enough to put it into words when I was just starting my running career (Jr in HS) but I bet if I did I would have taken ownership of my running earlier than I did.
All that to say, I hope the team really takes race reflection or any introspective examination or running seriously because I think it is tremendously beneficial. The mental component to running is sizable so it makes sense to devote a little of our energies into exploring this aspect of running.
I'll get off my soap box now.
