Comments:
I was planning on using the time trial as a test to see if I could run with my orthotics in my old spikes after ripping out the inserts from the spikes. I went out in a great place in the pack for three laps or so, but I felt like the pack was going too fast, dropped off, and still came through the mile in 4:53, but drifting off into space. I spent the next couple laps trying to keep some semblance of my goal pace, but fell back to finish alone in eighth place on the team in 10:07 with a 176 heart rate.
My immediate reaction was quite negative because I am very disappointed to run slower than I have both of the last two years and finish a meager eighth on the team. Neither coach told me they saw anything in my form or body language that looked like I was struggling or gave up. Coach Barnes told me that my mental state is better than it was last year. Last year, I’d have given a lot for that compliment but now I see that I’d rather run better than have people say nice things about me. I personally think there are two main things to conclude from today, I badly lack speed, and all-in-all I am not a very good runner right now, compared to last year and everyone else on the team.
Well, at least the spikes turned out okay and my knee is perfectly fine.
