Cal St + Driver's Flat

January 1, 2013 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 30s -> 50s?

Comments:
6ish came early, but I felt good upon waking. Drove to Auburn/Starbucks to meet "Mr Wonderful" and roll into Foresthill.

Left around 730 from Cal and FH road (-2min for AJW splits). Stride felt a bit stiff but warmed up gradually.

BEAUTIFUL out - cold, but pure sun; the river valley half-filled with fog, so cool!

Started out with a pretty moderate clip, me up front with BGD and Jorge behind. Early on I had pretty substantial gut rot, which sucked. I actually felt sick, like even peeing didn't feel good. Weird. So I was peeing all the time to relieve the discomfort. It wasn't fun.

Good convos and tremendous downhill running displays from Jorge. Unreal. He just bombs down the hills. I don't think that's an efficient STYLE of dh running, but to cover 50'-250' descents that way IS the way to go; because it'll save you :05 - :15 seconds that, if you CAN'T do that, you'll be working hard on the flats/ups to catch-up. I tried to unload, but it was difficult - felt like sprinting.

My stomach was so-so until I deuced after Cal St, then it was fine, which was great.

Even though we were moving really good, the only times I felt like we were working was on the double climb between Cal 1 and 2, and "6min hill", but even that felt good.

After Cal 3, Jorge was in front, and we slowed down by quite a bit, which was a little surprising, but fine - didn't want to bonk. Along Sandy Bottoms, we ran into Carey, who wrapped up the run with us.

Once at the River, we ran into Bruce LaBelle and another guy, and together we climbed our way up to DF. AWESOME talking to Bruce; that was our first run together and only our second convo. It was great to get some + feedback from my iRF articles from a ultra veteran/stud and fellow scientist.

Post-run: really wanted to stick around for the breakfast, but did In N Out in Auburn before hitting the road. Solid drive back.

*Insights:

- Mechanics? So-so. Too many convos = less focus on my mechanics. Post run I could feel L toes soreness, and a bit of back soreness, meaning I wasn't "opening R" and being compact on my L landing. OH well...

- Convos were good - it was nice to connect with Jorge, like I felt I would. He had some good insights, but I can tell he's still wounded pretty good from the divorce last year. Man, that's gotta be a tremendous blow to the "manhood" (e.g. one's fears of others' perceptions). I know it is, having had friends go through it. I think it'd be really awesome to live in V-town with Mr. Wonderful and share some trails and tales. And maybe have a true wingman again! I NEED it.

- Overall, what an incredible weekend! Even with some down times, it was still jammed with fun and enjoyment. And gorgeous trail running. Definitely some strong, positive, powerful memories to come in handy on 6/29. I really feel fit ALREADY, which is also quite awesome.
