Comments:
OK shuffler/snow day today. Drove up to Nederland (west of Boulder) for a trail "run". The trail started at 9000 and maybe climbed a merciful 1500-2000' over about 5 miles we covered.
The first mile was on a closed forest road with packed snow, then onto a very well trampled trail for another mile, where the bulk of the climbing occured to get on the "shelf" of the King Lake Trail, which ran along a creek between two ridges, heading due W to the Divide.
After passing Lost Lake TH, the trail went from SUPS AWES to sketchy. And it gradually degraded as we progressed...from runnable to hike-able to post-hole crazy. Finally, after about 1.5-2hr out there, we turned back. I reckon we made it about 5mi.
On the way back we were able to run, but it was sketchy - any slipping or posting = total leg and trunk buckling. My L lateral foot didn't like it, neither did my back, but both survived.
Finally got back to the solid trail so the last 2 mi was pretty good, and mercifully downhill.
Post-run: drove into Boulder to a new brew pub on the skirts of town, then drove back to Denver.
Got in touch with another former athlete, a HS kid who's now 25. Grabbed some beers with him and his fiance. Good day.
